Coast Electric Power Association encourages its members and south Mississippi residents to do whatever they can to use their energy wisely. One easy way to manage energy use is to replace incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).

While CFLs are a more energy efficient choice, some consumers have been hesitant to make the purchase because the bulbs should be recycled, not thrown away. Until now, finding a recycling center in Mississippi has not been an easy task but Coast Electric is working to accommodate consumers using the efficient bulbs. Consumers may bring unbroken CFL bulbs into any Coast Electric office location so they may be recycled properly. Coast Electric is leading the way for Mississippi by offering this unique recycling program.

Why should consumers make the switch to CFLs? One advantage is the extended life of CFL bulbs, which can last up to 10 times longer than a traditional, incandescent bulb. Using CFLs can help reduce energy costs too. For example, if one 100-watt bulb is kept on for five hours a day, it will cost the average electric consumer around $1.67 each month. In comparison, a 27-watt CFL bulb, left on for the same amount of time, will cost home owners $0.45 a month. Replacing just one bulb can save bill payers nearly $15 each year. While that may not seem like much, consider the savings if a home owner replaced 10, 20 or more incandescent bulbs with CFLs – they could save hundreds every year by doing something as simple as replacing light bulbs.
