  • Hurricane Carla came on shore Sept. 10, 1961 along the Texas coast. The area had to evacuate about 500,000 people. There were 46 fatalities with this storm and damage estimated to be around $2 billion. Winds reached approximately 150 mph.
  • Hurricane Betsy hit on Sept. 8, 1965 in Florida and turned to the Louisiana coast. Seventy-five lives were lost during this tragic storm. One hundred sixty mph winds caused $6.5 billion of damage making Betsy the third most costly hurricane in the United States.
  • Hurricane Camille hit on Aug. 17, 1969 as a category 5 storm. Winds were as high as 200 mph. The hurricane hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast area but caused flooding as far north as Virginia. Camille caused $5.2 billion of damage and 250 lives were lost making it the fifth most costly natural disaster in the history of the United States.
  • Hurricane Celia hit on Aug. 3, 1970 in Texas. High winds caused damage to an airport and destroyed a mobile home park. Eleven people lost their lives in this devastating storm.
  • Hurricane Elena hit in September 1985. Nearly 1,000,000 residents fled their homes, the largest peace-time evacuation in U.S. history. Total economic loss was near $1.3 billion.
  • Hurricane Gilbert hit on Sept. 16, 1988 as a category 5 hurricane. Winds reached around 160 mph. The storm traveled through Jamaica, over the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and then to the U.S. as a heavy rain storm. Three hundred eighteen people were killed in Mexico.
  • Hurricane Hugo struck Charleston, South Carolina in September 1989 as a category 4 storm. The total number of deaths associated with Hugo is 82.
  • Hurricane Andrew hit in southern Florida on Aug. 24, 1992 and then turned toward Louisiana. This storm was the most expensive hurricane in the history of the U.S. due to its destructive tornadoes and heavy rains.
  • Hurricane Georges hit on Sept. 28, 1998. No deaths were reported from the storm. The total estimated insured damage to homes was $200 million. Business losses were estimated at $110 million.
  • Hurricane Floyd hit in September 1999. North Carolina was the hardest hit of any state.
  • Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005 along the Mississippi Gulf Coast causing catastrophic damage to everything in her path. Hurricane Katrina went down in history as the worst natural disaster the nation has ever seen, with costs reaching into the billions and many lives lost.
